Fair question.
When you hear “memorial,” you might picture a funeral service. When you hear “studio,” you might picture paintbrushes, music, or someone telling you to find your light.
So what happens when you put the two together?
At Prism, a memorial studio is a space to remember someone, spend time with your grief, and explore what both of those things can look like in your life.
Sometimes that looks like gathering people and telling stories. Sometimes it looks like painting something you can’t quite put into words. Sometimes it looks like sitting with a cup of tea, listening, and having no interest in talking at all.
There’s room for that, too.
Why create a space like this?
After someone dies, there are usually things to do. Calls to make. Decisions to navigate. People to notify. Arrangements to coordinate.
And then, at some point, the immediate activity slows down.
People go home. The messages come less often. You’re back at the grocery store, trying to remember what you came for, when a song plays overhead and suddenly you’re crying next to the avocados.
Grief keeps showing up in everyday life. We wanted to create a place where you could show up with it.
A place where you can say their name without wondering whether you’re making someone uncomfortable. Where you can tell the same story again because you still want to tell it. Where a hard day doesn’t require a polished explanation.
What do you actually do in a memorial studio?
That depends on what brings you through the door.
You might come to a creative workshop and use color to express something you haven’t found language for. You might attend a gathering, hear someone describe an experience you recognize, and feel a little less alone.
You might bring your people together to celebrate someone’s life through their favorite music, photographs, food, and stories.
Or you might need a quiet moment. A comfortable seat. Somewhere to pause.
At Prism, we make space for remembrance, creativity, conversation, and rest. Some experiences are guided. Others leave room for you to decide what you need.
You don’t have to be artistic. You don’t have to share anything personal. And you definitely don’t have to arrive with a meaningful insight about your grief.
Does it have to be about someone who died?
Our memorial studio is rooted in remembering people who have died, but our grief-centered experiences also make room for other kinds of loss.
Relationships end. Health changes. Familiar roles disappear. Sometimes the future you imagined becomes a future you have to let go of.
Each gathering has its own focus, and we’ll help you understand what to expect. You don’t have to compare your loss to someone else’s to decide whether it matters.
And yes, Prism also helps with funeral arrangements
Prism Memorial is a licensed funeral establishment. We help families with the practical decisions and arrangements that follow a death.
The memorial studio is another part of that care.
You might need help arranging a cremation. You might want to gather six months later for someone’s birthday. You might discover us through a workshop years after your loss.
You don’t have to have used Prism for funeral arrangements to participate in our studio experiences.
We believe practical care and space for grief belong side by side.
You can laugh here, too
Remembering someone can bring up sadness, relief, anger, affection, or several feelings in the same conversation.
It can also be funny.
People leave behind ridiculous stories. Terrible recipes. Strong opinions about things that absolutely did not matter. Remembering those parts of them belongs here, too.
You can laugh and miss them. You can enjoy yourself and still wish they were there.
A place to learn to walk with it
At Prism, we believe grief isn’t something to get over, it’s something to learn to walk with.
A memorial studio gives us somewhere to practice that. Somewhere to remember, make something, meet someone, or simply take a breath.
So, what even IS a memorial studio?
At Prism, it’s a space for your person’s memory and your life as it continues. A place where both deserve care.
